Hip Flexor Stretch

The hip flexor stretch is critical for everyone, whether you ever intend to go the gym, or not.

Our hip flexors help us lift our leg from the hip, lift our knees from the hip and bend at the waist. They are at your upper thighs, right under your hipbones. You really notice them when you have started stepping class for the first few times, started running or are new to the elliptical.

You also notice them when doing full sit-ups.

...But, obviously, these are not the only times you use this flexor. Stretching is always important, as it helps to reduce the chance of injury as well as decreasing muscle tension.

The best way to stretch them is to push your hips forward and lean into the stretch.

Kneel on the ground and put one foot out in front of you so that the knee is about a 45 degree angle. Slowly lean your pelvis toward that extended knee. Make sure that your knee doesn’t pass your toe. You will feel the tension in the supporting leg.

You can also do this stretch with a step bench or weight bench.

Keep your supporting leg straight, but knee soft and lean into your leg that’s on the bench with your hips.

Don’t let your knee pass your toes.

Remember to properly warm up prior to these stretches, or any cardiovascular exercise.

You’re on your way to becoming the fitness woman you want to be!
