Importance of Warm Up

What is the importance of warm up?

"I exercise all the time, and I NEVER warm up. What's the big deal?"

Whether these words are actually spoken, or simply acted out through not warming up before exercise, they do not change how our bodies feel about the subject. The fact is, our bodies simply do not function as well as they could without warming up.

The importance of this exercise cannot be overstated.

Unfortunately, the words above (while rarely spoken) can be seen in every gym we visit. It is a common myth that people can just start stretching or beginning an exercise without a proper warm up.

But it is just that. A myth.

How much importance do you give to YOUR warm-up?

Click on the video to take five minutes and warm up those joints.

Before you exercise, you need to stretch.
Before you stretch, you need to warm up.

It might seem inconvenient (or even to lack importance), and when pressed for time it is certainly easier to jump right into the exercise routine or stretching. (It feels so productive and looks so good to be out on the track stretching right before we start our run or workout.) The problem is...

...it just isn't effective.

Let me explain... (This will be WAY over-simplified, but hopefully it gives you an idea.)

When our bodies warm up, our joints secrete a liquid called synovial fluid. Synovial fluid looks like egg whites - called albumen. (Synovial fluid got its name from "syn ovum", meaning "with egg"). It is also slippery and sticky like albumen, as well.

As our bodies warm up, the joints secrete this fluid into the space between our jointed bones. This lubricates and protects our joints. (Think of egg white between your finger tips.) Once there, this protection basically becomes like "liquid tendon" over the entire surface of our jointed bones.

Let me show you...

Importance of warm up cold start

Pre-workout, all we have holding our bones together is tendons (think of string or twine holding two things together). Our tendons are covered in protective coverings (think of the string running through coffee straws).

This gives it the ability to move back and forth (string sliding back and forth inside the straw).

Sudden movement can tear the straw or break the string. This hurts A LOT, and can cause long term damage.

Importance of warm up? Without it our joints don't move as easily.

Importance of warm up sudden movement - - OUCH!!

Once warmed up, our joints smear the albumen all over the string, the straw, and on both objects. This not only helps connect the two objects, but gives the strand and straw extra strength, so they can safely stretch a little more than before the added help.

Importance of warm up? Without it our joints are not as strong.

Importance of warm up is that synovial fluid lubricates and protects our tendons and joints.

Only after the egg white…

…I mean synovial fluid…

covers everything, can we safely and effectively stretch.

Importance of warm up? Without it stretching takes little effect.

Without proper warm up, flexibility will not effectively increase and you could hurt yourself.

So, exercise up, but make sure you warm that body First!
